The Daytona Beach News-Journal: Business

Forsaking corporate jobs may not yet be a trend, but if boomers made it one it wouldn't be surprising for a generation known for shattering barriers and doing things in its own unconventional way. Due largely to boomers' influence, work-life balance is becoming more of a priority for a U.S. population getting older and wealthier.

Rocket Science - Press Release - Go to Space

Left to right:
1: Germany's V-2 rocket, used from 1943 to 1945
2: USA's V-2, flown from 1946 to 1952 under various configurations. TF-1 shown (1951)
3: Soviet Union's R-1, flown from 1947 to 1953, launched with variations in design.
4: Soviet Union's R-2, was in service from 1953 to 1957.
5: China's DF-1, their version of the R-2, active from 1959 to1963
6: Canadian Arrow, first passenger vehicle version.

According to international agreement, space starts at an altitude of 100km (62 miles). Any flight that takes you to this altitude will let you earn your astronaut wings.

It is possible to make sub-orbital flights that can travel far above the orbit of the ISS and space shuttles, however this type of high altitude sub-orbital flight is usually reserved for scientific experiments only.

PLANETSPACE will take you to sub-orbital space onboard the Canadian Arrow spacecrafts.

The Canadian Arrow design is based on the V-2 rocket used during the early days of spaceflight. This vehicle has been updated using today's technology and data from over 3,000 previous flights of the early V-2 type rockets.

Added to the Arrow design is a state of the art escape system that will pull the crew cabin to safety should a problem with the booster occur during flight or while on the launch pad. Take me there!

Canadian Arrow Partners with Leading American Entrepreneur to LAUNCH FIRST COMMERCIAL PASSENGERS TO SPACE

Two entrepreneurs with a love of space have joined forces to create a company that will take passengers to space.

Geoff Sheerin, President of Canadian Arrow and Dr. Chirinjeev Kathuria have announced that they have joined forces to form a new corporation called PLANETSPACE that will complete construction and testing of its first suborbital rocket called the Canadian Arrow. The goal of the company is to make space flight available to the public within 24 months.

PLANETSPACE expects to fly almost 2,000 new astronauts in the first five years of flying and generate revenue from suborbital flights of USD $200 million in the fifth year. Fares will start at USD $250,000 for a suborbital flight, including fourteen days training.

Canadian Arrow has completed a number of increasingly powerful engine tests, as well as a successful drop test of the space capsule and recovery system. Canadian Arrow’s most recent engine test achieved 50,000 pounds of thrust, demonstrating Canadian Arrow’s ability to achieve suborbital flight and making it the most powerful liquid propellant rocket engine ever built and tested in Canada. Canadian Arrow has also filed for patents on its rocket vehicle and engine modifications.

Dr. Kathuria is no stranger to privately funded space flight. Dr. Kathuria was a founding director of MirCorp, the company that made history on April 4th, 2000 when it launched the world’s first privately funded manned space program and signed up Dennis Tito to space as Earth’s first space tourist or “citizen explorer.” MirCorp was a joint venture with RSC Energia. RSC Energia launched the first satellite (Sputnik), sent the first man to orbit the Earth,(Yuri Gagarin), built the Mir Space Station, and is a major partner in the International Space Station.

“Eventually, our goal is to make PLANETSPACE a public company,” said Mr. Sheerin, who will serve as President and CEO of the new company. “Space should be open to all people, and all people should also have the opportunity to invest in the future of space travel.”

Like Sheerin, Dr. Kathuria, M.D., M.B.A., has had a love of space since childhood. Dr. Kathuria has had measurable success in building a number of innovative businesses including American Teleradiology, Nighthawks and The X-Stream Networks, Inc..

“MirCorp was the beginning of the opening of space for the general public,” says Dr. Kathuria. “The Ansari X PRIZE represented another move forward. PLANETSPACE will be the next leap, providing a range of opportunities from sub-orbital jaunts to possible week-long journeys to space.”

Mr. Sheerin says that PLANETSPACE has entered final discussions with partners who will establish a reality television show set in space, and with a company to hold an international lottery with space flight prizes.

On May 18th The University of Chicago will be holding a Panel discussion on space tourism. This Panel will consist of Planetspace management, Canadian Arrow astronauts and faculty from the University of Chicago.

Belinda Stronach For Prime Minister!

Belinda Stronach finished second in the 2004 race for the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada. But she came first in the plan to keep Paul Martin's minority government in office for a while longer.

Stronach, formerly the Conservative MP for the riding of Newmarket-Aurora - just north of Toronto - used to be the international trade critic for the official Opposition and member of the House of Commons standing committee on foreign affairs and international trade. Now that she has crossed the floor, she'll represent the riding for the Liberals.

"I cannot exaggerate how hard this was for me," Stronach told a news conference announcing her move to the Liberal caucus - and cabinet. "The country must come first."

Martin named Stronach human resources minister and put her in charge of seeing that the recommendations of the report of the Gomery inquiry are implemented.

In a move that's given a sudden boost to the minority government while sparking calls of betrayal from the Tories, Conservative MP Belinda Stronach crossed the floor Tuesday to join the Liberal party.

Stronach, who was considered one of the rising young stars of the Tory caucus, has joined the Liberal cabinet and was rewarded with the portfolio of minister of human resources.

Her move gives Prime Minister Paul Martin's minority Liberals a better chance of surviving a crucial confidence motion on the federal budget on Thursday, and consequently avoid being forced into a summer election.

"I have been uncomfortable for some time with the direction the leader of the Conservative Party has been taking," said Stronach.

Seated next to Martin at a morning news conference in Ottawa, Stronach said she doesn't see Conservative Party Leader Stephen Harper as being "truly sensitive" to the needs and the complexities of Canada.

"Also, by forcing an election before the Conservative party has grown and established itself in Quebec, the hold over Quebec of the Bloc Quebecois can only grow into the vacuum. The result will be to stack the deck in favour of separatism, and the possibility of a Conservative government beholden to the separatists."
